[Konvas] Low cost scans || previously: 2 perf labs .....

I was thinking about this stuff a couple of years back. It basically
comes down to:
1. build a decent movement and a good backlight (or use an existing
camera movement)
2. point a camera at the gate
3. wire it all up to a controller and let it go
The scanner idea isn't the greatest... the mechanicals would wear out
relatively quickly on a consumer model. It's also pretty slow. The
fact that you can get 2 frames per scan is kind of a mixed blessing,
since it would double your throughput, but I imagine you'd run into
inconsistencies in the backlighting which would lead to a bit of a
flicker -- you could calibrate this out of course.
The SLR idea was a bit more interesting. A 3k x 2k bayer snapshot of a
frame could be downsampled to a nice 4:4:4 2K image. The drawbacks with
the SLR are that the colour depth may not be as good as a scanner, and
if you don't have a mirror that can be latched up (mechanically), you're
going to wear that part out pretty quickly. I was advised once to look
into using something like an enlarger lens for such a project, since
they are specifically designed to project a planar image onto a planar
surface.
Anyhow... my 2 cents. Would definitely love to see someone actually
give it a go :)
Cheers,
Sean
