I've been away for a few days and just saw this...
Paul Bruening down in Louisiana has built himself just such a system. He had a Mitchell movement modified by Bruce G'day! McNaughton as a 2 perf projector movement. He mounted a digital slr with I believe a flat field lens of some sort. Stepper motors, controllers, etc. Then he has an 8 computer server farm to process the images. I can't remember if it is a 2k or 4k set up he created. I believe he also has it set up to record in real time using a Canon XL2 as a recorder for workprints. He was putting some finishing touches on color rendering last time I heard about the project. Due to some health issues he was offering his services at what he described as ridiculously low rates.
If anyone is interested, I'll get you in touch with him.

I was thinking about this stuff a couple of years back. It basically
comes down to:
1. build a decent movement and a good backlight (or use an existing
camera movement)
2. point a camera at the gate
3. wire it all up to a controller and let it go
