review Vancouver Film Festival :
Forty-seven years after Fidel and his guerrillas rode through the streets of
Havana on the back of a truck,
the love and devotion ordinary Cubans still hold for their revolution and
its leader endures. Decades of poverty and struggle,
however, have taken a toll. Yanara Guayasamin's film recreates the Cuban
Revolution and its aftermath through the experiences
of the people who fought for it and lived with the consequences. Cubans are
proud, tough people, and their model of sustainable
agriculture, small-scale economies and self-reliance, as well as sheer
endurance, have set an example for the world.
But it certainly hasn't been all bread and roses.
After the fall of the Soviet Union (during the so-called "special period"),
the collective national will resulted in the entire country skipping one
meal per days for years.
This rare opportunity to see the stoic beauty of Havana is matched by
thoughtful commentary from a group of elderly Cubans
whose belief in the cause of social justice remains as vivid and impassioned
as it was almost 50 years ago.
Whether they're bemoaning the vapidity and lack of ideological values in the
younger generation
(drawn to the consumerist fantasia just across the water) or dancing and
singing in the streets, these aging revolutionaries keep on keeping on.
Chief among them is Fidel Castro himself, whose reminiscences provide a
remarkable window into the reality behind the myth of the revolution.
Cuba: The Value of Utopia restores respect and dignity to the
revolutionaries and the ideals that drove them,
and serves as a necessary corrective to the ossified received opinions that
have sprung up over time.
this is the comment of the organization comitee in the San francisco Latino
film festival
"The lines went around the block last night at La Peña Cultural Center for
"Cuba, el valor de una utopía".
The house was filled, and people loved the film. It was the biggest crowd
I have ever seen there."
