Hadn't thought about doing it that way before!
The only thing that would concern me about such a solenoid would be
consistent exposure.. you'd have to find one with spot-on
repeatability. A servo motor of some kind might do the trick for you
and give you slightly more control over the revolution speed. Stepper
plus a chopper for feedback?
