I for one, just returned a lens that looked "mint" on a shelf, but which would have cost more to repair than I could sell my car for. My car looks like hell these days, but it drives like a dream :)

I spent some time last weekend looking at some gear 'as part of an estate' that they needed prices for some reason, not material for sale, and something dawned on me-- really good cameras, really sharp lenses-- they always look almost beaten to death in cosmetics, and lenses and other gear that looks pristine, new, beautiful-- almost always has a problem of some kind, such as just not being as sharp as the users would like, some intermittent mechanical glitch, or something. The used gear that looks nice is the stuff that did not get used, usually because it wasn't that good-- and while there might be a few exceptions, almost all of the gear I've run into that is over ten years old and looks great is either a factory refurb or has a problem. How many of you have picked up a "great looking piece" and found it less than stellar in performance?.
