"True voiceover acting is such an art"
I totally agree with that but can be so expensive, may even absorb a large
proportion of your budget but if it gets the point over then it maybe worth it
especially if it means securing more lucrative contracts.
The trend in the US within the last 25 years or so has been to use 'heavy
nicotined' older men's voices to condition the audience to expect certain 'dark
and sinister' elements in a forthcoming film or commercial. It has always
been known that low frequencies will pentrate the 'thickest of skulls' with the
view that the audience will sit up and listen. This filtered through to the
UK and Holland for a number of years as they had a tendency to follow the
formats from the US. Today, a much lighter voice is chosen for such tasks and
many commercial makers now use a 'womans' voice for their VO's. Although, IMO
a heavy mans voice is sometimes more appealing to sell a film trailer but
ofcourse depends on the genre of the product.
In London for example, there are many retirement homes for actors and many
of these would be more than happy to do VO's for a very small fee. An older
person in the Autumn of their lives can produce wonderful tones and although I
agree may not have the microphone techniques of an experienced VO person, they
certainly will come very close. A good FX processor used properly will only
make it better.
A professional VO person is worth every penny but sometimes can overpower
the audience especially when the product does not match the quality and
delivery intensity of the voice. Disappointed audiences have long memories.
Hope you find your voice.
Rita
