The only other movie of Kubrick's that I would put in my "definitely enjoyed
it" category was
'Full Metal Jacket'.

I hated '2001'.
I hated 'The Shining'.
I REALLY hated 'Barry Lyndon'.

I had Full Metal Jacket in my hand the other day and thought shall I buy it
or not and thought not another "Gun Ho" war film so I did'nt but many people
said it is a good piece of film making?

As far as 2001 is concerned, I have never seen the complete film as I always
fall asleep half way through it.
I do like the chimps throwing the bone in the air and that's all I remember.
I must have made atleast a dozen attempts at watching it but although it is
a great piece of cinematography my eyelids don't agree with me.

Barry Lyndon well you can take it or leave not his best work.

Ah, The Shining. This is one of my favourite films. I was with Shelly Duval
in Malta 1980 where Popeye was made and had many a laugh with her especially
in the Dragonara hotel. So I know how she ticks and her role as Olive Oil was
a difficult one. She is very talented and is extremely sensitive to
criticism which makes her unpredictable which unfortunately she is at times. I still
have the original set plans before the storm blew it all down and then they
decided to use real tree trunks hence why the set still stands to this day as
a tourist attraction. So I like the Shining not because she was in it but it
was a very difficult film to make particularly when Star Wars was being made
at the same time and the 54 make up rooms were packed out with people coming
and going. Elstree studios was only a stones throw away from MGM's huge
backlot which was being made into a housing estate but part of it was used for the
hotel exterior scenes. Kubrick was being tested to the full and had to work
around the clock to finish it, that's why many scenes are shot at night to
hide the cranes and bricks for the housing estate. The interiors are all
Elstree studio based and the maize was at the old MGM lot 2 miles down the road.
May I add that MGM had the largest studio complex out of the 8 other purpose
built UK film studio complexes. Pinewod/Shepperton group now have that title.

The clockwork Orange is a strange mixture and I sense that Kubrick lost his
way which you would if your shooting ratio is 200-1. But Malcom Mcdowell is
not a particular favourite of mine partly due to his early attempts at acting
especially with early TV sitcoms. He had connections which kept him in work!

Would like to see a re-edited version of this film and take a fresh look at
it.

Rita
