Just want to add that the sixties were a very tense time especially in the
UK as we were going to hit first.
Why? Although, the UK had its own independent nuclear system which was
the Blue streak missile system which had to be launched from 60,000 feet from
the "V" bombers based at RAF Waddington and overseas bases. The "V" bombers
flew around the clock over the north sea fully armed every day of the
year. The whole of the east coast were lined with Bloodhound missiles, there
were thousands of them, you could see them in the distance from the roads.
Every day I saw huge white bombers flying up and down the UK. This went on
for years. Pictures appeared in papers nearly every day of Russian Bear
bombers being intercepted and their pictures taken with Hasselblads. The crews
were waving back at the cameras. Hundreds of nuclear bunkers were built all
around the UK, These are open to the public now as tourists attractions!
Some are a 1/4 mile under ground. The Russians were doing the same. What a
wast of money. I felt sorry for the Russian people, they were in the same
position as us but less informed.
The Russians were particularly upset that there were so many USAF bases in
the UK, even today there are numorous USAF airfields some with nuclear
facilities. The US are using the UK as their first defence before anything
happens in the US. Today, we have submarines to do the dirty work, British
built, British warheads but american missiles. It has given the world peace
for 60 years so perhaps it had a use.
The Cuba crisis was bad but nothing like the cold war where everyday could
be your last.
Kubrick took advantage of the situation and capitalised on it to make
money. He is a great film maker but not a genius.
