Just want to add that the sixties were a very tense time especially in the
UK as we were going to hit first.

How fast you go wouldn't have mattered, really, or in which order.? "On The Beach" as very truthful about the worldwide effect of an exchange.

Everyone dies.

?

Why?? Although, the UK had its own independent nuclear system which
was the Blue streak missile system which had to be launched from 60,000 feet
from the "V" bombers based at RAF Waddington and overseas bases. The "V" bombers
flew around the clock over the north sea fully armed every day of the year. The
whole of the east coast were lined with Bloodhound missiles, there
were?thousands of them, you could see them in the distance from the roads.
Every day I saw huge white bombers flying up and down the UK. This went on for
years. Pictures appeared in papers nearly every day of Russian Bear bombers
being intercepted and their pictures taken with Hasselblads. The crews were
waving back at the cameras. Hundreds of nuclear bunkers were built all around
the UK, These are open to the public now as tourists attractions!? Some are
a 1/4 mile under ground. The Russians were doing the same. What a wast of money.
I felt sorry for the Russian people, they were in the same position as us but
less informed.

You have hit one of the key points--? the Soviet aircrews waved at the NATO aircrews-- and the NATO aircrews waved at the Soviet Bloc aircrews.

They both knew why they were there, what the score was, and that-- in SAC's motto truth, they all had Peace Is Our Profession as both their task and goal.

It was uncomfortable, but they knew that they could trust their crewmates not to "just start something" without reason--
and that they could trust the Soviet Bloc to do the same thing.

?

The Russians were particularly upset that there were so many USAF bases in
the UK, even today there are?numorous USAF airfields some with nuclear
facilities. The US are using the UK as their first defence before anything
happens in the US.? Today, we have submarines to do the dirty work, British
built, British warheads but american missiles. It has given the world peace for
60 years so perhaps it had a use.

Sometimes the best way NOT to fight is to stand ready to fight.?

It worked.

The Cuba crisis was bad but nothing like the cold war where everyday could
be your last.

Every {deleted} last day can be your last day.? The Cuban Missile Crisis was one chapter of the Cold War-- but the Cold War was no more a threat to you than any other day.? I mean, what can happen today?? Tomorrow?

An earthquake?? Car out of control because the driver had a heart attack?? A tree limb falls on you?

"A JILLION AND ONE" things can be "the last day" each and every single day.

The Cold War was one in which both sides realized what the odds were, what was happening, and worked to make sure it did not happen.? The greatest danger was "if" someone could steal and detonate a device-- so extreme measures were taken to ensure that would not happen-- be it by a fanatic military faction or outside terrorists.

Kubrick took advantage of the situation and capitalised on it to make
money. He is a great film maker but not a genius.

If you have a bunch of people in a lifeboat-- a leaky lifeboat with inadequate supplies, sharks circling the boat and bumping it, no clear idea of where land is, or even if you are heading in the right direction, you work together, no matter how much you might think you hate each other.? You don't knock more holes in the boat, AND you may move to opposite ends and glare at each other, but you work together.

If you have one guy who sits there and mocks you, lies about what you are doing, and, instead of helping, makes things worse, you've just found your Kubrick.
