If you can find a copy of Frayne & Wolfe (1949), for a reasonable  
price, grab it.

Sure, its mostly optical sound, but it is still relevant as "Dolby  
Stereo" is just a very simple extension to what Western Electric/Bell  
Labs researchers had already accomplished by 1938 ("stereo variable  
area light valve" ... still in new production to this day) and in  
1947 ("Davis 'tight loop' drive system") still in new production in  
the Newoptix (ex-Westrex) Photophone (ex-Westrex) RA-1231, and also  
in the "Dolby Digital" Cat. 601 (etcetera) basement readers.
