Thanks everyone,
Terry was correct; it's more or less a history/theory course. I probably
should have clarified the description of the class a little bit better.
It is officially called "Introduction to Film" in the Catalog, with a
course description as follows:

"Presents an analytical and interpretative study of film masterworks.
Covers the historical development of film from silent short movies to
the present and includes an analysis of film from several perspectives:
artistic, technological, social and economic."

It's not an overly technical class (we don't talk about film stocks, the
different nuances between Cooke and Zeiss, the way a camera is loaded,
etc.), and many of the students are not film makers, nor want to be.
Although it would definitely benefit future film makers, it's a great
class for English/writing/journalism majors that want to hone their
writing skills on something other than a book report and for future film
critics that want a better understanding of what goes into a film.

Btw: I was teaching an editing class, but that class was taken over by a
"full-time" faculty member, so I was asked to teach this class. I have
to admit, at first I wasn't entirely thrilled with the idea. But this is
now my second semester of teaching it and I'm finding it to be a lot of
fun. The editing class students were tied to a computer for the entire
class, but this one has twice as many students, is much more open, and
is full of discussion...
