Thanks Bruce. That clears it up for me.

Dear Kelly
The ASA standard aperture for anamorphic is 21.9 X 18.59 (.864 X .732) This gives you an aspect ratio of 1.78:1 which is stretched 2:1 giving a final ratio of 2.356:1
We take the gate out to 18.7 which helps a little with dirt etc along the edge of the picture. Splicing is not an issue with the higher image because the projector aperture is 21.28 X 17.78, masking the final image.

Hello all,
I have a Kinor 35C and am prepping to shoot tests with my newly acquired round front anamorphics. The gate I have (academy) currently measures approximately 22mm x 16mm ( .866 in. x .630 in.) I’m told that the default aperture size for the modification is to enlarge the vertical aperture of the gate to 18.7mm. This is confusing to me as the current aspect ratio for Panavision and most anamorphic film gates is .825 x .690. I understand that the width of the gate at +-22mm is a lock and will more that likely be slightly matted or eclipsed by the optical sound track, but if the gate is vertically enlarged to .736 (18.7mm) isn’t that grossly over doing it—besides encroaching real estate for splicing. In addition, the math isn’t adding up for me. If the current aspect ratio for anamorphic is 1.19:1, then in relation to 22mm, wouldn’t the modification be closer to +-18.48mm?
Just curious if someone out there has possibly addressed some of these issues and could relate some helpful advise before I have my engineer start cutting up my camera.
Thanks,
Kelley Cross
