Why is anything industry standard?  Why is 3 pin industry standard for audio?  Someone else here will reach far back enough to know, but it has been said that Eclair's NPR camera might have first used 4 pin XLR type connections (although the Mitchell R35s also had it).  Arri quickly caught on.  
Also, you don't want to mistakenly plug in a 4 pin battery into audio 3 pin xlr gear.

Ok, so I have a noooob question here. Why 4-pin XLR for power cables? It's obviously industry standard, but why?
