It's not a silly question at all. The way it was explained to me:
1 negative; ground 12VDC
2 pilotone/rangertone
3 remote start - bypasses switch on camera body
4 positive 12VDC
Why 1 & 4 for power? Farthest away from each other in the connector, thus
least likely to short when it's abused (and it will be!). Note the cute
"clues":
1 is a - or negative sign turned on its side/end
4 is a ... well, if you look reeeeeeeeeeeeeeally hard, you'll see a + in the
very shape of the number itself.
And Lael's right on: ya don't want to never, EVER connect your 4-pin to a
3-pin. If it's audio, you can mess things up real good; if it's 3-pin
power, THAT has become the standard for 24V, and you don't want no 24V on
your 12V control circuitry. Odds are you may even burn out some brushes on
a stupid 12VDC brush motor.
This DOES happen if you put 12V onto the old Arri governor-controlled 9VDC
motor for the 16S/ST/M ...
Best to all
