"BE WARNED. Looking at the broken lens images could make you sick to your
stomach..."
You are right there Adam. I am shocked!
I am surprised that nobody else has thought the same as me. The inner zoom
barrel has a long screw thread which should slow down any inertia from a
sudden impact but ofcourse multi impacts will propel it forward BUT the screw
thread will stop short before it got near the front inner element. Even if there
was no grease on the thread it would rotate forward quite quickly but would
never fully reach the inner end element even on a hard impact. Are we saying
that the inner barrel was machined so it hits the glass every time the zoom is
activated. This is very shocking news. Was this a Lomo?
I don't think the inner zoom barrel hit the glass but the barrel hit the end
stop so violently that the shock wave travelled through into the glass and
cracked it. As you know 'all glass' items have millions of minute fractures
built in its structure during the firing process and remain there for life,
hence why glass is extremely fragile especially in sheet form and hates
vibration of any kind.
Taping the barrel is a good idea but better still is to try and reduce the
vibration by suspending the lens in huge quantities of foam and bubble wrap
and then encase it in a hard shell of some kind. It is important that the lens
must not be allowed to move even a "cats whisker".
Rita (must dry my eyes, too upsetting)
