Dan,
I believe I had the same issue once a few years ago. We'd shot about 
half a can of film (it's been a while, but it was probably a 300' short 
end) and the mag suddenly went all wonky.

Again, it's been a while, but if my memory still serves me, I traced the 
issue down to not seating the lead edge of the film into the take up 
spool properly and it just came undone. Most likely from all the 
starts/stops jerking it around in there. It probably happened earlier, 
but didn't get caught until halfway thru the roll.

I'm not sure if that's the same as in your case though. But when it 
starts to bunch up inside the mag, a lot of things seem like they could 
be the cause when they are actually a byproduct...
