Glad you seem to have found the problem, Dan. I am going to be extra careful about that take up core from now on. 
 
On another note, you mentioned the lack of a multimeter when you were out. I always carry one, and I find it nearly as useful as having my lightmeter with me. It can eliminate so many questions in seconds. I have good ones, but the one I always have in my box is from Harbor Freight for $2.99, I kid you not. It works perfectly and if I step on it or it falls in a puddle I'm not going to cry over it. I have been meaning to put together a little survival kit with my rentals that will include one of these meters, some screwdrivers of the appropriate sizes, allen wrenches, etc. I'll post my little list when it's done in case it will help someone.

I didn't have a multimeter on me to check it, and was already starting to pack up when it occured to me that the little fuse in the motor might have burnt out.
