"Very interesting camera but still a lump to carry and hold but in those days"

I didn't use the camera enough to really get used to it, but can say that for portraits, it definitely has advantages over a traditional LF field or studio camera - mainly how fast you can take a photo after you've composed the shot, and how fast you can make the next exposure. However, it's less fast than cameras like the Speed Graphic - which was used by many photographers for reportage. The old press cameras are fantastic buys these days, and a great way to get into LF. They don't have have many movements but since they weren't meant to be used for architectural or landscape work, who cares.

I don't know a-lot about the Graphic SLR's, but my guess is that they were mostly used for portraiture. Then again, check out http://static.photo.net/attachments/bboard/00K/00Kv6L-36224284.jpg

which was apparently owned by the Detroit Times. Imagine lugging that bazooka around!
