Brandon,
Best bet is to follow the directions and use some leader film (or else 
some old 35mm stock that you find on ebay).

My general rule of thumb, or in this case "finger", is to use my 
pointer, errr... pinky, finger - seriously, it's a long story... Don't ask.

The long and the short of it all - you will definitely want to get some 
leader and practice, practice, practice.
