 From what I understand, the "Smoothcam" filter in Final Cut Pro was 
taken from the same code that made the stabilizer/tracker in Shake. 
Since Apple announced it is no longer supporting Shake, they started 
ripping its guts out and shoving it in their other products, namely 
what's in Final Cut Studio (Color, Motion, and FCP).

I still can't understand Apple's logic behind moves like this. They 
offer a high end software, then kill it off. Then they replace it with a 
dumbed down version meant for the masses.

Of course, I don't always understand what direction the other software 
guys are moving in either. Autodesk and Avid both confound me as well, 
but at least they aren't dumbing their products down...
