[Konvas] Square Front Anamorphics

First-- the RED camera.? There is an oct19 front for the RED, and the front costs less than converting a lens to PL.? One of the surprises of the RED is that it loves the Cooke Speed Panchro and LOMO glass-- and gives better results with those than the new RED glass.

Checking midday tones--? you go out in the middle of a sunny day and see what color the light reflection off the front "shows."? This is particularly useful with older Cooke, Zeiss, and Rodenstock lenses-- all of which went through a number of coating changes that don't match serial numbers.? All the model/serial/date off the front helps, but the
color is a factor.

If you type LOMO PL into an eBay search you can find lenses already converted, about two dozen or so, and strangely enough, right now in the same models the PL mount LOMO anamorphic are the same or less than the oct19 mount lenses in most cases.? It appears you got a large bargain with the lens you got, so be prepared for sticker shock.? Use eBay search for "anamorphic" or 'cineamascope' and look around there-- and get back to us with the color of your coatings and the markings on the lens.? Some of the lenses are reused serial numbers with new glass, just to make it fun, so the original may be 1969 but the glass and coatings may be two different later changes.

enjoy

Thanks for the info!
I am actually using it on a Red camera. I bought it from a co-worker and it came with a converted PL mount.?

it seems well collimated.?Of course most tests have been with flares - i couldn't help myself.?

He tells me if I can find some with oct-19 mounts he can help me get them converted to PL.

I got it form him for $600. I am not made of money so I am not looking to spend a mint on these lenses. But, i do have a little to set aside.

Funny thing. I don't own the camera and I am not even a DP. I am more of a cinema enthusiast. I am an editor by trade but i do direct small projects and shoot some as well. Getting the 50mm has me inspired to shoot something larger.

How do I check the mid-day color of the lens? Also, the lens is from 69. I know I am ignorant of many things to consider. I appreciate your help.

Thanks for the reply!

If you dig through the archives you'll find discussions about this topic, but, in short, not all square fonts work together-- the different coatings and revisions in design make matching your set important.? I've got a few on hand, but I need to know the color of the "mid day sunlight reflection" off your front element and the model number on it to see if I can match it up properly.

Other thing I hate to ask, but-- what type of price range are you looking to stay within for the 35 and/or the 80, and where would you need it shipped to??

I presume you are using this on a 2m body, correct?? One other thing to watch out for-- lenses where fitted to a particular camera.? The Konvas mount may vary a couple of degrees in either direction, and you can easily "match square" yourself or you can have a tech square up and triple check seating alignment.

Hey There,

I picked up a 50mm square front and have been having the time of my life with it.

Just curious if anyone out there can connect me with a 35 and/or 80.

Looking to round out the set.

best,

Augustine ?
