2.66, 2.55, 2.35, 2.39 and 2.40 all apply to the same product ...
CinemaScope.

The centering changed from 2.66/2.55 [ * ] to 2.35, abandoning Full/
Silent's center for the Academy's center, but Fox still shot all its
'Scope features using Full/Silent, and no actual changes were made to
the production equipment.

I suppose once it finally abandoned its Fox Studio Cameras for
Panavision rentals (the Fox cameras were still used for "B" work for
a while) then it finally converted to Academy center.

But not necessarily as Full/Silent is still an available option, and
it became an imperative with Super-35.

My take on it is goes something like this: after a couple of
unfortunate incidents where the special, narrower 'Scope negative
assembly splices failed during printing, they decided to go back to
the conventional, wider Academy negative assembly splices for 'Scope.
Of course, the splices were then showing all over the place, and a
reduction in height, first to 2.39 and finally to 2.40 was imposed as
a standard.

The way current product is being transferred to DVDs, it looks as if
it was pre-1958 2.55, and not post-1958 2.35.

[ * ] 2.66 was used in the interim while the Ampex CinemaScope
penthouses were being completed. Once mag-striped, the prints became
2.55.
