Nice strong wooden fence!  
 
You were using a 75mm  on that one but were you using the same  lens on the 
cushion shots?
 
While you were holding the lens against the camera, how much light was  
creeping through the gap between your hand and lens mount as contrast was on 
the  low side although the image was fairly sharp. Naturally, with proper  
lighting the test would be have been more obvious.
 
If you built an adjustable rig to hold the lens and camera then perhaps you 
 would not need a lens mount providing you could seal the join with a black 
foam  gasket or something.
 
Interesting test though.
