[Konvas] New Canon? - Ergonomics anyone

Lael, by box I obviously did not mean a square piece of metal. All the Arri cameras
you mentioned are "boxes" without their magazines, viewfinders, lenses,
top handlegrips etc. The ergonomics you talk about comes from the
add-on accessories. The camera is just the body. Try hand holding just
the camera body and let me know if it will be any easier than hand
holding a DSLR, prosumer camcorder or RED ONE body. Because the
ergonomics come from the add-on accessories, the ergonomics can be
changed and customized to your needs. Who wants to shoot handheld with
a 1000' mag when you can use a 400 one? You can add things to a DSLR in
the same fashion. Film cameras are modular. DSLRs can be modular as
part of a motion picture system if you consider it the camera body, which actually is what they are. Video cameras are self contained affairs. Broadcast cameras have
exchangeable lenses but that's it. If I want a top grip on a Arri I can have it.. If I want a right hand grip
I can take the top grip off and mount the new handle. If I want to
handhold it I can add a shoulder brace, if i want to mount it on a
steadycam I can strip it down to body lens and mag. You can't do that
with a video camera. You can with DSLR. Because DLSRs like movie cameras are just light tight "boxes" that you add things that you need to them.

Sorry I gotta jump in here. Nothing serious, just humorous.
< An Arri is just a box. >
The BL series (especially BL4) fit me nicely and was what I'd call
ergonomic. Moviecam Super America wasn't bad. Kinor fit good too.
Then came the Arri 235. Fit like a glove. Definitley not a box.
Unfortunately Arri came out with the 235 ten years too late for me. Red
One IS a box. I use one and it requires the ET Mantis at only $1950 to
make it tolerable for handheld.
Most broadcast size video cameras have some ergonomic value - their
weight sits on my shoulder like it should. Most prosumer grade video
cameras have lousy ergonomics. Feel like I'm holding a brick out in
front of my body.
Just my two cents. Please carry on with the Canon expository. I'm
finding it very educational.
