Square fronts were designed to operate on a 1M/7M.

Round fronts were designed to run on a 2M/8M/Kinor.

2M/8M/Kinor lenses work on 1M/7M, but not vice versa.

It has to do with the angle of the mirror shutter, and the clearances  
to the same.

The lens mounts have a key which prevents 1M/7M lenses from being  
mounted on a 2M/8M/Kinor.
