"What's the current thinking when finding mould on the griptape around
the edge of a film can? Trash it? Salvageable?"

Branoon,

I would worry when the tape starts to fall apart and leave glue residue on
the tin, which means its old or badly stored.
I have used 20 year old stock stored with my mushrooms and processed fine
albeit had red veiling.

If your project is worth doing then use fresh stock or clip test what you
have but all depends on what you require from your film stock. I really
don't understand why everyone stuffs their film stock in the freezer when
Kodak/Fuji etc clearly state the correct temperature for long term storage. Most
of my stock cine and still is stored in a spare refrigerator at around
40-45F. If I buy fresh cine film then it is used within 6 weeks and processed
shortly after so the only film stored are short ends and some of this is
cut down onto reloadable cassettes for still photography or given away.

Obviously, sometimes a great deal turns up and you have to buy bulk but
storing film amongst your meats and frozen foods is not recommended due to the
 bacteria content.
