My late friend was optical engineer...his boiling ( in a large sauce pot) besides destroying the coating, dissolved the balsam lens cement...he also used the sunlight trick as necessary. Based on the lens or market he would get some of them recoated, which he found not always a requirement.

Again, I haven't a clue about what hurts/helps a lens, so this is just a
question - but how about (after properly securing) running it through
the dishwasher? The dishwasher is not the same as boiling, but it will
have hot, bacteria killing, jets of water spraying on it with force. And
you can wash your dishes at the same time... haha?

It's not the best idea, just because there are so many dishes that you
are not supposed to run through the dishwasher. But, maybe??
