Todd, your info is at best outdated.

First of all, the lack of 24p is no longer a problem. The 7D does 24p, 25p at 1920x1080 and also 50p and 60p at 1280x720.

Manual controls are available now in the 5D and most likely in the new 7D.

Audi should always be recorded separated in my opinion if you are shooting drame or anything you care for audio. For interviews it is certainly the wrong camera. When you record audio separated all the audio problems you mention are gone.

About using SLR lens for motion picture, this is the same problem people who shoot with 35mm adapters and Nikons or canons lenses face. But you don't have to put up with the clumsy adapters. Letus, M2 or P+S, they are all clumsy.
but if we could use the Lomos with the 7D all that would ge gone too.

Difficult to import? FCP takes it straight in without a hiccup.
Noisy video? Maybe if you don't know what you are doing. Check these:

Ergonomics? Between a XL-H1 with a 35mm adapter which becomes a beast to handhold and a DSLR on a shoulder rig I choose the DSLR in terms of ergonomics. Snap a Zacuto viewfinder, a shoulder rig and you still at 1/10 of the price of a XL-H1+P+S.
Besides, H.264 is a much better codec than the HDV of the XL-H1 too.

Just FYI... in some of the other forums that I host/haunt there are quite a number of stories already from people who have attempted to use the 5D for video work, some of the efforts quite extensive.

The consensus seems to be that it is a fantastic camera.  A fantastic still camera, that is.  For video, the more or less universal opinion is that it is the wrong tool for the job... a wrench when you need a screwdriver.

The list of issues they have encountered are numerous... Aside from the simple ergonomics of using a still camera for motion footage.... there's the rolling shutter issue, 30fps only, no manual controls in video mode (without a firmware update), difficult audio recording, no audio monitoring at all, focusing difficulty of trying to use SLR lenses as cine lenses... those are from the shoot side.  On the post side I've heard reports of difficult to import/use footage, and VERY noisy video (especially in blacks).

I'm not knocking the camera, or advocating it (and haven't used it), just passing on what I've heard.   But to me it a "real" video camera with a lens converter is a much more "cine friendly" way to work.  As I said, not knocking the camera... I'm a big Canon fan and use the XLH1 (with primes and P+S Technik converter) every day.

It will be interesting to see what the 7D holds.

T2
