"It is more than a board and a chip"
Does anybody know on this forum what the electronics actually do in
detail. I refer to any camera but particularly the Arri 16 and 35 series and
ofcourse the Kinor/Konvas cameras. We have touched on the Konvas mechanics in
much detail over the years but there is very little information on the
electronics and what exactly is their function.
The Mitchell camera does'nt seem to have any electronics as such unless
there is an additional add on box to control its speed.
Would be interesting to know what goes on inside a Kinor 35. The failure
of its circuits seem to be the common issue but what fails, is it the quality
of components or just a bad design and is doomed to fail whatever the
usuage. I've had a 14 inch Sony TV for 27 years and has never failed once
except for a on/off switch. I have also had a Russian micro 6 transistor radio
the size of a watch for 30 years and is still working albeit crap
reception. Could it be the design of camera circuits was not really thought out in
the first place and was thought of an after thought by the designers. An
Electrical engineer is totally different from a Mechanical engineer and the
two do not always go together. Take Kinor for example, did they "buy in" the
electrical know how from an independent source to keep costs down.
If we knew what fails in camera circuits then we can identify who to blame!
I have a feeling that 'heat' could be the main cause of failure of camera
electronics but ofcourse if the initial design was wrong and together with
poor quality control then its "doomed" from the time it left the factory.
Rita (I have an urge to gain knowledge)
