If it's worth shipping the tape, here in Alabama there are still a few one-inch machines floating around.

Kudzu Productions in Huntsville has a one-inch machine, as well as Diamond Studios in Birmingham. I believe that the film lab that we use (Encore Media in Nashville Tennessee... formerly Motion Picture Laboratories) still has one in operation, too.

Strangely enough, I got a call from a television station about a year ago who wanted a one-inch dub instead of the Betacam dub that we had sent them. They wanted to know why we couldn't do it. When I explained to the person that called that neither Sony nor Ampex had made the machines in 20 years and hadn't made parts for them in 10, they were genuinely surprised... they still use it.

It's both funny and sad that these machines were well over $100,000 when new... but you can find them cheap (some even working) on eBay, CraigsList, and Mandy.com. I've even seen some offered for free to whomever was willing to come pick them up.
