Hello Matthew,

AFAIK, there are few BRAND NEW Kinor's. But price will be about
$12,000-15,000 each. If anyone interested under such price, let me
know. Then I'll negotiate it with owners.

Hello,

Please help me with following info:

1. Does it crystal sync at all speeds? Or only at 24, 25?
2. Does somebody can tell me what each pin for.
There are 4 pins inside connector numbered from 1 to 4.
I need to know how to connect power right. Which battery
you'll reccomend?

Thank you very much for your help!

P.S. I will test it (with your help) and soon it will be
available, if anybody want to upgrade existing 15epss to
crystal sync 17ep. That's why I need this information.

Hello Comrades :-)

BRAND NEW Konvas 1M kit with 360 degree rotatable viewfinder,
15EPSS motor, controller, new batteries, 7 mags (2-400ft) and
more available for sale:

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1308334569

The cleanest Konvas I saw. I was impressed how it was stored by
previous owners! They follow all instruction from factory to store
camera without work. In special wrapping in humidity and temperature
control room. Each three years - repackaging and checking. They are best.
They bring this camera from 1984 to 2001 in Brand new condition.

I hope somebody will be intrested in this camera.

P.S. Sorry, last days probably too much messages from me about
Russian equipment for sale. I appreciate your time and attention.
Thank you!

P.S.2. Tommorow or after tommorow one more notice about Temp 1SKL
for sale and looks like we'll stop selling cameras this year and go
on vacation. If anybody intresting to purchase Temp 1SKL - please let
me know. May be we'll sell it directly.

P.S.3. In January we'll have for sale ABSOLUTELY ARRI COPY (not like
Arri) - it is sharp Russian copy! I do not have access to Arri 2C/2B
and if somebody have access to this camera - I need your help. We'll
make pictures and prepare camera for eBay, than will send one mag and
one lens(or may be whole kit) to somebody, who have access to Arri and
intrested in this investigation too. You will need to check if it is
compatible with Arri and if it is really sharp copy: mag fit Arri camera
and lens fit Arri bayonet. After this we'll know what to write in
description - it is sharp copy (absolutely compatible with Arri) or it
is just very similar, which looks-like Arri 2B/2C. After we'll sell it
on eBay - we'll ship camera from Ukraine to high bidder and will transfer
payment to ship mag and lense to high biddder. So, you will not
carry expences, but will do test for me and others.

Please let me know if somebody intrested in this investigation.
We'll have two of these cameras soon in Brand new condition. This
camera is not yet described on commiecam website. And it is very
intresting too!

All other equipment including connectors will be available only in
January. I am not sure we'll find these connectors, but we'll try.
I think it will be not difficult.

I am asking another sellers from ex-USSR: Victor and Rafael.
If you have right now power connector for 17ep-16apk motor - please
help Andrew. You know - it not cost too much.

I think Victor must have these connectors available. Please contact
Andrew if you have one or few.

Andrew, I will contact you as soon as I find it, but as I said it will

Hello Comrades!

I have very strange request for all who purchased from me something
before. I sold brand new Konvas and zoom lens to one person on eBay
and he is very very concern to deal with ex-USSR.

Can anybody, who purchased something from me before simply confirm that
you received all equipment from me as described and I am honest
seller - I will very appreciate this.

I know it is strange request and if you do not want to do it - please
do not do it. This my buyer is a good guy, but he is waisting my time
and very concern to deal with me in Ukraine.

Thank you very much.

His name Thomas Ivanyi and his e-mail: tivanyi at msn.com
Simpy send him shot e-mail (if in past you purchased something from me).

Sorry again I am asking you about this. I asked to confirm succesful
transactions some of my recent buyers and I am not sure I can reach all
of them and they will help me.

P.S. This my buyer is new on eBay and it looks like he simply did not
understand that my feedback is enough to trust me or not. He is very
concern to transfer $2089. Usually in this cases I ship without
payment, BUT he just registered on eBay and he has no positive
feedback yet. And I am also concern to ship without payment. I never
left negative feedback before and I do not want to do it this time I
will follow his request about confirmations/recommendations. And
actually I understand his concerns.

He said that he understand that my feedback rating is good, but he
want to hear from movie equiment buyers about movie equipment I sold
before to them. That's why I am asking you to help me. Thanks again!

and is as described by Vasily to be in excellent condition.

If you have early konvas with rheostat motor - use 6-8V DC up to 9A.
Speed adjusting by rheostat. You need very powerful battery or
AC adapter to provide very stable power to motor. If batteries can not
provide stable power and discharging very fast - you will have
problems with speed stability. But if you have good batteries and
motor was not overheated before - you will have enough stability of fps.

If your Konvas have 15EPSS motor - you need to use 8V DC. Speed
controled by motor controler. Motor has actually two motors inside and
controller operates second motor to stabilize speed. Speed stability
is +/- 2.5%. You will need 8V DC. Using 12 V batteries can ruin
controller and possible you will hear additional mosquito like noise
sound, because some of high voltage transistors inside controller used.

If you use 17EP-16APK or crystal sync motor - you need 12V DC - minus
are two top pins of connector, plus are two bottom pins.
Motor contain a lot of Russian specific logic chips inside - please
use right polarity and appropriate voltage! If motor will be fired -
it will be difficult to repair it in USA!

You also may have another type of motor...

I'll try to ask for this lens, but I can do it only in second part of
January, because now all my suppliers are on vacation and I can not
reach anybody. I met only 16mm lens for 1M before. Never saw 10mm
lens for 1M or 2M. But I know it was manufactured. I'll add your
request to my database and will let you know if I'll have something
for sale.

By the way, Comrades, does anybody intrested in square color temperature
filters for matte box? Check your matte box size. It must be
130mmx130mm. If it is so - I have some filters for color filming.

OA> please email if you have any suggestions,

Look here http://homepage.mac.com/karmitz/motors.htm

It require 6-8V DC. First of all - try to test powercord.
May be problem in power cord only, not in motor!

You can easily rebuild power connector for
appropriate batteries you have and use it with this Konvas.
Drive is simple not sync drive, speed controlled by built-in
rheostat, but it runs with speed approx 1440 revolution per
minute and it is enough stable. If you are using power battery,
which not loose power fast - speed(fps) is stable enough.

Look at attached picture. It works as described below.
At first you need to remove drive from camera and test it to be sure.
connect to "1" and "2" 6-8 V DC 16W 9A power or similar. Motor runs
and speed can be adjusted by adjusting rheostat.

Do not use included power cord - try to test motor with tested power
cord to find where is a problem - power cord or motor.

Find right polarity - swap contacts to see rotation direction.
Now let's see at 3 and 4 connectors and lever 5. When you pressing
lever 5 it connect connector 3 to connector 4. When released
connectors are not connected.

So, you need connect like the following:

3 -> to power supply
4 -> to 2
1 -> to power supply

or

4 -> to power supply
3 -> to 1
2 -> to power supply

it does not matter

Connect power supply. Now pressing lever will activate motor on
camera. Adjust speed looking at tachometer (fps meter) using
rheostat(ring on drive). If you are using very stable power supply
which transform AC power from outlet to DC power (not battery) - you
just need to adjust it once and that's all. If you are using battery,
which loosing power fast during filming you probably need to check time to
time speed and adjust rheostat. Use powerful battery and good cords
and speed will be stable enough.

Attention - do not overheat drive! As I know, you need to use it
during approximtely one minute, than let short time to cool it before
filming again. Try your drive to find how long exactly it can work
without delays. Some people say it can be heated dramatically. Not all
motors. Fine motors works well. Overheated can really heated
dramatically.

Top side of motor has switch "R" "III" and "0".
"R" "III" - working mode. "0" - stop. It also has push lever - it used
to mechanically start motor if it does not run at first second. So, you
conect, pressing lever but motor not runs - press this lever fast and
relese it to start rotation. It is simply instructions.

You can simply unscrew drive and rebuild connectors on drive on more
modern. Or simply install your wires inside motor. Existing are
vintage and to find cord connector which will fit this connectors are
hard in USA.

You also can simply connect only 1 and 2 connectors and use external
switch to run camera on and off. You also can buy modern rheostat and
use it as external rheostat (in this case adjust rheostat on drive in
lowest position). I saw very fine self-made modern power supplies
for this camera. They are very simple and builded on modern batteries
and rheostats.

This camera like all in Russia is like war equipment. Runs and works
with any power works at wide range of temerature and very stable to
shocks, etc. So, do not worry, you can experience with it, it is not
complexive like Arri or others. No electronic inside. All stainless
steel and alluminium. All electric parts very reliable. Just do not
overheat and do not use motor attached with wrong polarity ("plus" and
"minus" connectors on battery) - wrong directioned rotation with drive
attached on camera can destroy rubber connector between drive and
camera.

Problems may be in switch, power cord, wires inside, rheostat.
I do not believe problem in motor, which located inside this handgrip.
Try to dissasemble motor and look inside. There only motor inside and
no electronic. You do not need instruction manual for it.
If you can do it - find any electric technician and allow him to
dissasemble it and test all wires, rheostat and cords.
Nothing special inside, do not worry, you will not destroy something.

I hope all this info will help you.

Subject: New Konvas user - loads o' questions
From: Barry Green
Date: Dec 30, 2001 21:09 PST

Hi all,

I just won a Konvas 1M on ebay and am anxiously
awaiting its arrival. I've been using an Eyemo, and
am anxiously looking forward to being able to actually
look through the lens! ;) And 400 feet at a time?
Heavenly!

Until it shows up, here's a bunch of questions:

1. Does anybody know if the Konvas can be converted
to 3-perf? or, even better, 2-perf movement? There
was a lot of discussion about Techniscope, and I gotta
say I want to give it a try.

2. I've seen Anamorphic gates offered on ebay, does
anyone know if there's a full-frame Super35 (silent
aperture) gate available? The combination of a Super
Techniscope gate with a 2-perf pulldown would be
simply magical...

3. I understand that the 200-foot magazines are not
very useful. Is it just that a full 200-foot core on
a Kodak spool doesn't fit? If you were to break down
a 400-foot load into three 133-foot loads, would those
work in the 200-ft magazine or are there other
problems?

4. Related to #3, I thought there was some talk about
getting smaller cores, so a full 200-ft load would fit
in the 200-ft magazines. Did this happen? Can we get
those smaller cores anywhere?

5. Are there any still-lens adapters available? I
would *love* to find a Pentax M42 universal screwmount
lens adapter for the 1M.

6. How 'bout a blimp or barney -- any leads? The
link on the commiecam's site seems to be down.

7. I'd like to know if there's anyone who sells the
17EP crystal motor, and what it might cost to upgrade
to it from the 15EPSS.

Thanks!

-Barry

Hello,
i was able to buy a 17Ep and a 19 Ep motor (we got a few konvases) your
best bet would be to try and contact Viktor Nikityuk nikitiuk27 at yahoo.com
or you can try Vasily Fursov vasily at e-trade.dn.ua
both of these gentlemen are from Ukraine, these motors are crystal and are
quiet reliable. you might also need to get some extra 5amp russian fuses as
you can't get them in the US. We upgraded our 1M to accept the old east
german Pentakon lenses, these are Carl Zeiss jena lenses and was designed
for 6x7 cm format, if you have access to a machinist, you can easily have
an adopter ring made. heavier lenses may need additional lens support. i
have seen a konvas 1M in ebay that has been converted to accept Nikon 35mm
still lenses, you can check out www.longvalleyequip.com i spoked to a
technician who has succesfully sold his konvas in ebay complete with a
upgrade to nikon lens mount and video assists! the cost of his upgrade is
quiet reasonable considering the amount of work involved. i have recently
tried the peleng 8mm lens on my konvas, it seemed to work but needs to be
centered properly. i read it from american cinematographer that this lens
can be adopted for use with an Arri 35-3 and 435. it's a very cheap lens,
with a pentax screw mount, you might find it on auction in ebay once in a
while.

got any plans for the eyemo 35?

good luck!

The lens comes in a neutral mount, and is supplied with Pentax screw mount
adapter (for K-3) and a Nikon F mount adapter (for Nikon still cameras, or
for Freiss and other 35mm conversions, including VistaVision).

The lens itself has a cylindrical surface with a grove for a set screw.

The adapter need only match the cylindical surface, provide one or two
appropriately located set screws, and then match the camera on which it is to
be mounted.

If someone would make a CP-R adapter for the Pelig, I'd be among the first to
buy one.

While the AC ads usually charge $495 for these lenses, they are also usually
available for about $195 from eBay sellers (although you might have to make
an off-eBay deal to get that $195 price).

I actually used it to shoot a series of no-budget

like it, I don't know why... it's so unbelievably
primitive, yet it did a gorgeous job. If all works
out with the Konvas I might list the Eyemo on ebay,
but I'd hate to -- it shoots full-frame Super35, and
it's a fully tricked-out setup -- three-lens spider
turret, 400' magazine, electric motor, special M42
lens mount adapter, scads of objective viewfinder
lenses... (don't laugh, I have a Filmo with all the
same stuff -- and, of course, it's been converted to
Super16 too... I know I'm totally wacky, but there's
something irresistibly charming about shooting
widescreen HDTV "format-of-the-future" stuff on a
goll-dang WWII-era military wind-it-with-a-doorknob

What I'd really like to do is find some inexpensive
way to convert the Eyemo to 2-perf, and experiment
with Techniscope filming. At 2-perf a full 100' load
will last over two minutes! That seems like it'd be
such a luxury, not having to re-load every 60
seconds...

Thanks,

-BG

Couldn't agree more with your attitude. Film cameras are pretty simple
devices really. So why are they so damn expensive to rent and buy? The high
technology is in the film. Well the Russians have to come to our aid haven't
they? I believe Konwas/Kinor cameras will encourage more film makers to use
35mm as a economic option for lo budget shooting. I cannot believe Super 16
is cheaper, when you take into account the camera hire and interneg costs.
Techniscope was big in the late '60s and was used a lot in spaghetti
westerns and the like. Don't know why it isn't used more? Maybe it is a lack
of camera equipment. Well an enterprising engineer could fix that by
converting a few Konwas and Kinor cameras. Remember you get a scope format
with spherical lenses and use half the neg stock. Does anyone know if labs
can transfer the neg directly to DV for editing?

Here's about the only info I can find on modern
Techniscope:

http://www.multivision235.com.au/home.html

It's an Australian lab that believes T-scope is the
way to go, and they have some interesting comparisons
against S16 on there.

The big drawbacks seem to be in finishing on film --
optical or digital blowups, no contact prints allowed,
all means $$$. But for finishing on TV? You get
almost the same-sized 1.85:1 extraction as 4-perf
35mm, but for half the film cost and half the budget.
You get a better 2.35 extraction. You get to use
spherical lenses. And you reload half as often. And
you get vastly more negative area than 16mm or
Super16, and shallower DOF. Seems ideal for finishing
on TV.

I guess the three questions are: a) can we get a
Konvas modified for 2-perf pulldown, affordably; b)
who can make a T-scope gate (probably Rafael); and c)
who does 2-perf telecine? I understand the new
Millennium Machine is factory-designed to handle
2-perf, but the only one of those I know of is at
Pacific Post and I think they charge $900/hr... I'd
like to find someone with a Rank (like Yale at
$175/hr) and see if they can do 2-perf. After all,
the whole point of t-scope is to do quality things on
the cheap, so spending $900/hr to transfer seems to
defeat the idea...

Barry, thanks for the information.
Well as far as post-production is concerned it should n't be too difficult
to modify a Rank Cintel or somesuch telecine for 2 perf transfers. There
are quite a few machines on the market now. Why I believe this whole area is
worth following up is that it is win - win for us lo budget merchants (I
should say lo budget and proud of it). Scope picture, half the neg costs.
If the transfer to DV or DigiBeta is cracked then there is only the final
stretch costs from 2 perf neg to 4 perf squeezed print, or is there an
interneg process? We have some expert lab people on this forum, maybe they
can answer this.
Off to a party now, and as a famous British explorer once said "I might be

The Filmo, and probably also the Eyemo, use a particularly primitive type of
pulldown claw mechanism.

A double surface cam rotates in the shutter shaft.

The two surfaces consist of:

1) an outside surface which is in every dimension the same height as the
inside of the yoke on which is mounted the pulldown claw; as the shutter
shaft is rotated, the yoke moves up and down, and

2) a side surface which is designed to move the pulldown claw into the film
during pulldown only.

There is a slight dwell at the end of the pulldown cycle while the pulldown
claw is withdrawn and this causes the registration.

A return spring withdraws the pulldown claw.

The exposure actually takes place as the pulldown claw is moving upwards,
preparing itself for the next pulldown cycle.

It is a precision machining job, but not a very difficult one. The profile of
the first cam would be duplicated, but the offset from the shaft centerline
would be such that there would be only two perfs pulled down. The profile of
the second cam would not have to be changed.

Telecine of 2-perf material is pretty easy -- many Ranks, and all
Spirits, can accomodate this.

However, there is no longer a simple, cheap way to go from 2 perf neg to
4 perf squeezed print. Technicolor used to have a pretty clever process
for this, but it's long gone. You can either make an optical IP and dupe
neg, or else go digitally from 2 perf to 4 perf in a single generation
(at a cost of $40K and up). Suddenly 4 perf looks a lot more
economical...

There are some good recent examples of low-budget anamorphic features --
"George Washington" looked great, and was shot very cheaply in 35mm with
a Moviecam Compact and JDC Anamorphic lenses. Most of the prints
appeared to be off the original camera neg, risky but they looked really
beautiful.

For most people, unless there's a real reason to shoot 2-perf (underwater
housings) or if it's only intended for video release (not far-fetched)
are probably better off shooting 4 perf or Super-16.

This was Technicolor's proprietary "direct to matrix" printing technique,
which also used (and required) "auto select", yet another Tech proprietary
process for negative compositing which eliminated the need for A and B rolls,
and could hide splices even on 2-perf negatives (this was originally intended
to hide splices on 4-perf CinemaScope negatives).

Since very little work is presently being done using dye-transfer, "direct to
matrix" is not an option. And, for those features which are being printed
using dye-transfer, the matrices are apparently being printed from INs, not
from the OCN.

"Direct to matrix" requires three optical printer passes, one for eachprimary
color, and that is expensive. The squeeze is introduced while passing the
2-perf OCN in the printer projection head and the 4-perf matrix in the
printer camera head.

2-perf to 4-perf conversion is still available ... somewhere ... as the
underwater sequences in "Titanic" were done using 2-perf in order to double
the amount of time available on a single camera load.

Reportedly, James Cameron acted as DP for those sequences.

Cameron has brother who works for Panavision and panavision made a special
2-perf camera for this specific shoot.

I think you're right, whenever you deviate from the "normal" way of
doing things you can usually run into the reasons WHY the normal was is
the normal way. If I was shooting for theatrical or even a short for
film-festival release, I'd definitely shoot academy aperture 1.85:1
4-perf. It sounds like good advice that "if you're making a print,
shoot in 4-perf."

But you're also right, my main interest in 2-perf is for video release -
TV commercials, corporate films, and direct-to-TV stuff.

Well, that plus it's 35mm quality at half the price. Twice as much
negative as S16, with half the DOF of S16, for about the same price.
Seems like a win-win here!

Subject: more 2 perf
From: Lael Camak

Hi all and Happy New Year almost!

I use a telecine shop in Atlanta that can do about everything. They have a
new Millenium with Y Front and can do 2 perf, you name it. I just did some
vistavision stuff there and they were using my vistavsion footage for demo
at last Nab. The company is VTA at www.vta.com They make the "steadigate",
a device that has been adapted to many telecines throughout the world to
improve steadiness in the telecine process.
These guys are great and will work with you on price. Best $ bet is to send
in your footage and have them do it unsupervised. I get rates from
$300-650hr. They can telecine now 2K realtime to HD, 4k to hard drive at
15fps, and are close getting to 6k (Why 6k? Well their 65mm gate is due any
day now. The gate itself cost $75k. I think they got a contract to start
telecining Imax's stuff for High rez digital projection.). Anyways, you
spend time talking to Glenn there and he'll cut you a deal 404-634-6181.
Feel free to mention my name - Lael Camak.

One option to putting back to 4 perf would be posting your 2perf 2k on HD,
and then doing a 4 perf neg print from digital. I'm looking at maybe buying
an HD nonlinear suite now. Prices are coming down every day.

Anders Banke looked into converting the 2M to 2 perf recently. I think he
got to the conclusion with his engineer that it could not be done
mechanically due to the movement's design. The Arri 2B and C can be done to
2 perf as well as Mitchells, and probably Kinors. Anyone have any success
on seeing how useful the Soviet copied Arri 2BCs are? Noisey, but they are
probably very useful if converted to 2 perf.

Happy Holidays to all.

Subject: Eyemo TechniScope modifications
From: Rick Garbutt
Date: Dec 31, 2001 17:11 PST

Happy New Year, Gang!

I work as a unit DoP and Camera Operator on shows with major studios, and do
a lot of specialty filming with stuff like macro, time-lapse, and slow
motion to 7,000 frames/second. And I own more than a dozen Eyemos.

The modification for 2-perf is something I've mused about for a very long
time, so it's reignited my interest to see these postings.

Peter is quite correct: the dual-profile cam that actuates both the
pulldown and the insertion/removal of the pulldown claws into the perfs is a
classic Bell & Howell design. And all you need to do is

1. change the profile of the pulldown face of the cam to 50% of its
original stroke
2. replace the aperture mask to accomodate the new, smaller frame height
AND give you exposure on the full perf-to-perf width of the film.
3. recenter the optical axis on the east-west axis of the new, wider
aperture.

The warning phrase is "all you need to do". I have designed many Eyemo
modifications, and my VERY experienced machinist advises that modifying that
cam profile is considerably more difficult than you might think, partly
because, once the new cam is machined, it MUST be case-hardened, or it will
wear about as fast as you shoot film. And since the pulldown stroke with
its dwell is what registers the images, and since there is no registration
pin system in the Eyemo movement, this is CRITICAL.

The bad news is, it's not 2 cams: it is a SINGLE cam, with a compound
surface, and that's one of the things that complicates it all. Trust me.

So working out how to modify that thar cam is going to take some serious
engineering in terms of finding an appropriate material, and having the
metalworking facilities to manufacture a VERY critical cam surface. It goes
without saying that there will probably be one or two prototypes that fail
before the right one is figured out. This tends to be the Way with such
things.

I've made a New Year's resolution to start fiddling with this, and if it's
successful, will be trumpeting the triumph from the rooftops. If someone
beats me to the punch with a reliable conversion, I'd be grateful to hear
about it. And if anyone wants to compare notes, that would be welcome, too.

Long live Techniscope.... er, oops. TechniScopeĀ is a registered trademark

maybe it would be best to use a Secret Code Word, like, oh, I dunno ....
maybe TScope.

Best to all,
Rick Garbutt, soc

Note that "Technirama", perhaps Technicolor's most successful wide screen
process, is dead.

The claimed "first use" date, 2/2/1953, is clearly bogus.

Note also that "Techniscope", perhaps Technicolor's second most successful
wide screen process, is alive.

The claimed "first use" date, 6/19/1953, is also clearly bogus.

"TechniScope" is equivalent to "Techniscope", for all intents and purposes,
and, therefore, "TechniScope" should not be used, without the expressed
written permission of Technicolor.

Finally, note that "Technivision", which is quite similar to "Technovision"
is also dead.

The claimed "first use" date, 3/27/1953, is, again, clearly bogus.

Based upon the obvious claim of "Technivsion", a completely non-existent
process, vis a vis, "Technovision", a real process, although a short-lived
one, it should be possible to use "Technoscope", for which there is currently
no USPTO database entry.

There are several "Technovision" entries, none of which apply to motion
picture film or processes.

Therefore "Technovision" is either not registered at all, or it is registered
in another country (probably Italy).

Incidentally, Techniscope was an invention of Technicolor's Rome (Italy)
laboratory.
